Camila Cavalcante is a visual artist with a background in journalism and art criticism with a varied interest in investigating the conceptual, sentimental and social perception of art. Through the use of documentary photography, her work intertwines embroidery, collage and installation to create a place in which the idea of ‘private’ and ‘public’ overlap and complement each other.
Coming from the Northeast coast of Brazil and, after living in three other countries, settling in Scotland, she is curious about finding common ground between different cultures, countries and people. The study of the landscape led her to explore the way it unfolds into abstracted ideas of space, ‘bodyscape’ and social conventions. She uses photography to project herself onto her subjects, dissolving perceived borders, cultural differences and nationalities; immersing herself, her body and her art into a shared anthropological experience.
Camila holds a degree in Journalism from the Federal University of Alagoas, a post-graduate degree in Journalism and Cultural Criticism from the Federal University of Pernambuco, and a Masters of the Arts degree from University of Westminster, London. She was awarded two photography national prizes in her home country and has taken part in over 30 exhibitions in Brazil, the US and the UK. Most recently Camila exhibited her series Scar at Hidden Door arts festival in Edinburgh. Camila has also been selected to develop her work in three art residencies, including Arquetopia Foundation For Development, Mexico, and Despina, Brazil. Some of her works are part of the Pinacoteca Universitária Public Collection in Brazil, as well as several private collections in Brazil and the UK. Her book bilingual book For the Lives of All Women, about women's reproductive rights was published by Break the Habit Press in 2019.

Camila Cavalcante é uma artista visual com histórico em jornalismo e crítica de arte cujo interesse está em investigar a percepção conceitual, sentimental e social da arte. Por meio do uso indispensável da fotografia documental, seu trabalho se entrelaça com bordado, colagem e instalação para criar um diálogo em que os conceitos de “público” e “íntimo” se sobrepõem e se complementam.
Natural de Maceió, há mais de dez anos que divide seu tempo entre o Brasil e o Reino Unido fazendo um estudo da paisagem e explorando seus desdobramentos: espaços abstratos, o corpo como paisagem, sensibilidade e território comum. O uso a fotografia projeta a artista no objeto fotografado, dissolvendo fronteiras, diferenças culturais e nacionalidades.
Camila é formada em Comunicação Social pela Universidade Federal de Alagoas, pós-graduada em Jornalismo e Crítica Cultural pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco e mestra em Artes pela University of Westminster, em Londres. Já foi premiada em dois concursos nacionais e já participou de mais de 30 exposições no Brasil, Reino Unido e Estados Unidos. A mais recente foi uma exposição solo no festival de arte Hidden Door, em Edimburgo. Camila já desenvolveu seu trabalho em três residências artísticas, incluindo Arquetopia Foundation For Development, no México, e Despina, no Rio de Janeiro. Algumas obras de Camila fazem parte do acervo público da Pinacoteca Universitária, em Alagoas, assim como várias coleções privadas no Brasil e Reino Unido. Camila publicou o livro bilingue Pela Vida das Mulheres, pela Break the Habit Press em 2019.
